If you’re teaching kids how to read blends including FL-, BR- and SM-, these free blend clip cards are a must.
Use them as a literacy center, word work station, word work activity or homeschool game. The sky’s the limit!
Getting Ready
To prep these blend clip cards, I simply printed the cards on cardstock to give them extra durability and cut them apart.
Then, I grabbed a basket of clothespins and clipped each card in the correct spot. I flipped the cards over and colored a small dot next to my clipping spots so kids would be able to self-check their answers later. All done!
Note: If you’ll be using the cards in a classroom, you may want to laminate them so you can use them year after year.
Teaching Blends
When I was ready, I placed the blend clip cards in the center of the table along with the small basket of clothespins.
I reminded children that blends were two consonant letters that almost seem to blend together because they are spoken so quickly. We worked together to brainstorm a list of words that start with a blend: clam, brick, brain, grandma, price, skate…
Then, I invited one of my students to pick up the first card in the pile and sound out the word slowly.
“Cr-o-c-o-d-i-le,” she said. “It starts with CR-!” She picked up one of the pegs and clipped it to the CR written on the card.
One card after the next, the kids took turns placing the clothespins on the correct answers.
When they were finished, they flipped the cards over to make sure they were correct.
Blend Clip Cards Extension Ideas To take the learning further, see if kids can think of any other words that begin with each blend. Invite students to sort the cards into piles of matching blends. For instance, “broom” and “bread” would be a pair because they both start with BR-. Have kids play Memory. Divide students into pairs or small groups and ask them to spread out their cards face down on a table. Players will take turns flipping over two cards at a time and saying each word. If both words start with the same blend, students keep the pair. If they don’t match, they return the cards to their original spot and let the next player go. The player with the most pairs when all of the cards have been claimed is the winner. Grab Your Set
